LaCasa Summer Lunch Program

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students:
It has been our pleasure to offer breakfast and lunch to our students and their siblings during the Covid 19 school closure.  However, after Friday, May 22, Portales Municipal Schools will no longer serve the meals.   Instead, as with every summer, the La Casa Summer Food Service Program will begin to serve breakfast and lunch to all children 18 years of age and under.  They will serve meals from every school site in Portales between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 12:00 noon. They will begin the program on May 26th, and after that serve meals Monday through Friday.   On the 22nd, each person served  by PMSD will receive a lunch and breakfast for Monday, May 25th as well.  PMSD will not serve on May 25th.  Because the La Casa Summer Food Service Program is separate from the schools, the first time you go to pick up meals, you will need to take every child in your household who wishes to receive a meal to the meal site.  You will receive a card at that time that provides for how many eligible children you have in the family, and after that you will only need to provide the card to their staff and pick up the meals.  Your children will not have to be present after you receive your card.  Please see the attached letter from La Casa for more information.
Again, it has been a pleasure serving you.  Please stay safe and healthy.
With best regards,
Johnnie Cain

Educational resources for students during this shutdown:

Portales Municipal School District wants to provide families with educational resources during this closure.  The district will be utilizing an online platform called Clever that your child can log into and access learning resources that are appropriate for them, depending on their grade.  Many students are already familiar with Clever and can go to and use the username and password they use at school to log on.  If your child does not know their district username and password you may call Portales Central Office at 575-356-7000 between the hours of 8:00-3:30 Monday through Thursday to obtain this information.  Thank you for your continued efforts to support your child's education during this trying time.

From the Superintendent:

May 22, 2020:

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students:

Today, May 22, is the last day of school.  I know that none of us could have ever foreseen a conclusion to a school year such as this.  This was something that was out of everyone's control and hopefully we will see some normalcy in the coming school year.  Although I know the educational opportunities we offered over the past 8 weeks were not perfect, I think our teachers did an outstanding job of providing your kids opportunities to continue their education and be better prepared for the upcoming school year in August.

What the future holds for the next school year is anybody's guess. I am certainly hoping that we can begin the year with everyone back in the buildings and our kids soaking in the educational opportunities that await them.  However, that may not be the case.  I do not think that distance education is the best method to teach most of our students.  Therefore, over the summer we will be making plans for different methods that may be available to ensure that our students have the opportunity to receive the education they deserve.  This may include a staggered schedule, some in-person, some distance, a late start, or maybe a combination of methods.  Regardless, we will be working to start the year as best we can.  Summer school has been cancelled, but we are putting after-school programs in place at every school.  We will use the extended time to work with any student who needs additional instruction and intervention to get them back on track to complete a successful school year.   These programs will run 1 1/2 hours after school and we will provide snacks and transportation home after the extended day concludes.  This will not be mandatory for everyone, but it will be open to any student who is having difficulty, needs additional help, or that you as a parent or guardian feel could benefit from the program.  Our goal is to have every student who might be behind at the beginning of the year to be on track for completion of a successful school year by the end of the first semester.  We will then offer a more formal summer school in June of 2021 for those who might still need the additional help to move to the next grade or class.  You will hear more about this by the end of July when we know better what our next school year looks like.

Even through it all, our seniors will graduate tomorrow, Saturday, May 23 at 10:00 a.m. in the Portales High School Ram Athletic Center parking lot.  This will be a unique and historical graduation that has never been conducted before and I hope will never be done again.  You can watch the graduation live on the livestream on our website at  Click on the "Webcast" icon to go to the graduation.  If you are there to witness this ceremony, you can hear everything by tuning to 95.3 FM on your radio.  The graduation ceremony will also be archived so that you can see it at any time convenient to you.  All seniors will receive a DVD with the graduation broadcast, their pictures receiving their diplomas, and other footage of the ceremony that will help them memorialize this historical event. Following the graduation ceremony will be the Senior Graduation Parade from the High School to ENMU. Please see below for details.

If you have borrowed a Chromebook and have not returned it, I ask that you do so as soon as possible.  I hope that the Chromebooks were helpful during the past several weeks of school.

Finally, thank you!  As I have said, I knew this time would be challenging.  I warned you that it would not be perfect, but I am proud that our teachers and staff did their very best.  I know that it was difficult having to be a co-teacher with your student's regular teacher.  I know that some of you found it difficult motivating your kids to do their work, and you felt the loss of what your kids missed over the last 9 weeks of school.  Hopefully, we can make that up to you next year as we partner again to provide your kids with the best education possible.  I will share any new information about the coming year as it becomes available.
